Back in the Game - 25 years later

After about 25 years away, I’ve found my way back into fantasy wargaming through Kings of War.

Like a lot of people, I was a Warhammer Fantasy Battles player back in the day. Life moved on, the hobby faded out… and then somehow it crept back in again.

These days I’m living on a boat on the Lancaster Canal, painting between cups of tea and the occasional interruption from two cats — Bubble and Magic — who take a keen interest in anything small and carefully painted.
Magic takes a nap in my tiny painting area...

This project is a bit different from anything I’ve done before.
I’m building a Persian-themed Goblin army — something a bit unusual, mixing historical inspiration with fantasy nonsense.

 Expect camels, elephants, magic carpets, bright fabrics, dusty bases, and probably a fair few mistakes along the way.
Highlands miniatures hobgoblin range will be the main focus of the armies minis...

The aim of this blog is simple:
Track the army as it grows
Share what works (and what really doesn’t)
Keep things short, honest, and hopefully useful

Finding the right colour scheme and basing...

This week feels like a bit of a turning point. After what feels like 20+ attempts at getting the look right, I think I’ve finally landed on something I’m happy with — both in terms of the basing and the goblins themselves. First proper basing attempt This is my first real go at a desert base for the army. I wanted something that felt natural without being too busy — just enough variation to stop it looking flat. A mix of sand, stones, and a few tufts seems to do the job. Pretty happy with how this has turned out, especially how the darker rocks break things up.
